Why Winter is Higher Risk

Extended darkness is the primary factor driving winter crime increases. With sunset as early as 4pm in December, criminals have substantially more hours of darkness to operate undetected. The festive season brings additional risks as homes fill with valuable gifts and many properties are left empty during holiday travel.

How Crime Rates Are Calculated

Crime rates are calculated as the number of recorded crimes per 1,000 people in each area. This standardised measure allows fair comparison between areas of different population sizes.

Our Data

We use official UK government data sources including Police.uk for recorded crime statistics and the Office for National Statistics for population figures. Data is aggregated at town, local area, and national levels to provide meaningful comparisons.

Calculation Formula

Crime Rate = (Total Crimes ÷ Population) × 1,000

All data is sourced from official UK government databases:

  • Police.ukPolice-recorded crime data from all 43 territorial police forces in England and Wales
  • Office for National StatisticsPopulation data and the Crime Survey for England and Wales
  • Home OfficeNational crime statistics and policy data
  • FOI RequestsAdditional data obtained through Freedom of Information requests to police forces
Our database tracks crime statistics for over 4,557 locations across England and Wales, including most major towns, cities, and counties. Data is updated as soon as new statistics are released by official sources, typically every two months. Historical data is maintained for trend analysis.
