UK Overview
Spring Crime Patterns Across the UK
Understanding seasonal trends helps you stay prepared during the highest-risk months
Open Window Risk
burglaries involve no forced entry — as spring warmth arrives, open windows and unlocked doors become easy targets
Bicycle Theft Surge
more bicycle thefts in Q2 (spring) than any other quarter — warmer weather puts more bikes at risk
Garden Crime
thefts from gardens per year across England & Wales — 9 in 10 household thefts occur outside the dwelling
Shed Break-ins
garden sheds are broken into daily across the UK — the average insurance claim for shed theft is £4,205
Why Spring Brings New Risks
While lighter evenings help reduce some opportunistic crime, spring introduces new vulnerabilities. Warmer weather means open windows, bicycles left outside, and valuable tools returning to sheds and gardens. More than a quarter of break-ins need no forced entry at all — a reminder that basic security habits matter most as the seasons change.

How Crime Rates Are Calculated
Crime rates are calculated as the number of recorded crimes per 1,000 people in each area. This standardised measure allows fair comparison between areas of different population sizes.
Our Data
We use official UK government data sources including Police.uk for recorded crime statistics and the Office for National Statistics for population figures. Data is aggregated at town, local area, and national levels to provide meaningful comparisons.
Calculation Formula
Crime Rate = (Total Crimes ÷ Population) × 1,000
All data is sourced from official UK government databases:
- Police.uk — Police-recorded crime data from all 43 territorial police forces in England and Wales
- Office for National Statistics — Population data and the Crime Survey for England and Wales
- Home Office — National crime statistics and policy data
- FOI Requests — Additional data obtained through Freedom of Information requests to police forces
