Violence and sexual offences dominated the crime profile in Lancing and Sompting during May 2023, accounting for 37.8% of all reported incidents. This category, which includes assaults and harassment, was matched precisely by property crimes, with shoplifting and criminal damage contributing to a balanced split between violent and non-violent offences. The overall crime rate of 7.4 per 1,000 residents placed the area 7.5% below the UK average, a consistent trend that may reflect the area’s character as a mixed-use built-up zone with a strong residential component. Seasonal factors likely played a role in shaping these patterns: longer evenings and the proximity of bank holidays in May could have increased outdoor socialising, contributing to both violence and shoplifting. The high rate of shoplifting—28 incidents, 104% above the UK average—suggests that local retail hubs remain vulnerable, due to foot traffic from nearby commuter routes or student populations. Conversely, anti-social behaviour and public order offences were significantly below the UK average, indicating that community cohesion or policing efforts may be effective in mitigating disorderly conduct. These findings illustrate a relatively stable area where targeted interventions could further reduce shoplifting and weapons-related incidents while maintaining the current low levels of violent crime.
