Lancing and Sompting’s crime rate in August 2024 stood at 5.2 per 1,000 residents, 36.6% below the UK average of 8.2 per 1,000. This figure reflects a built-up area within Adur that, despite its proximity to coastal tourism hubs, maintains a relatively low crime profile. Violence and sexual offences accounted for 32.2% of all reported crimes, followed by anti-social behaviour (21.9%) and criminal damage and arson (11.6%). These figures contrast with the UK averages for the same categories, where violence and sexual offences were 37% higher (2.7 per 1,000) and anti-social behaviour 24% higher (1.4 per 1,000). The seasonal context of August—peak holiday month—may have influenced patterns: while empty homes could theoretically increase burglary risk, reported burglaries fell sharply by 71.4% compared to July. This decline may be partly explained by increased police presence during summer or the transient nature of holiday visitors, who are less likely to be targeted. Conversely, the rise in drug-related offences (up 125%) suggests a shift in local dynamics, linked to increased illicit activity during the summer months. The area’s low crime rate, combined with its proximity to major transport links and coastal attractions, indicates a unique balance between urban amenities and community safety measures. While the overall profile remains positive, the sharp increase in drug-related incidents warrants further analysis to ensure sustained improvements in public safety.
