Amber Valley’s crime rate in July 2024 stood at 8.0 per 1,000, 4.8% below the UK average of 8.4 per 1,000. This figure, while lower than the national benchmark, conceals a complex mix of trends, with violent crimes forming the largest share of reported incidents. Violence and sexual offences accounted for 40.4% of total crimes, significantly higher than the UK average of 2.9 per 1,000. This outlier category, which includes 419 incidents, may partly explain the overall rate’s deviation from the UK norm. The summer season, marked by festivals and extended daylight hours, likely contributed to increased public interactions and associated risks. Anti-social behaviour, at 1.6 per 1,000, and public order offences, at 0.9 per 1,000, also exceeded UK averages by 10% and 41%, respectively, reflecting the challenges of managing crowds and ensuring public safety during peak tourist periods. In contrast, property crimes such as shoplifting and vehicle crime were 56% and 57% below UK averages, suggesting that Amber Valley’s approach to retail security and transport infrastructure may be more effective. These patterns align with the area’s characteristics as a mixed-use district with significant public spaces and seasonal events that attract both residents and visitors.
