December 2024 marked a shift in Littlehampton's crime profile, with an 11.4% decline in the overall crime rate compared to November, yet the area remains 29.6% above the UK average of 7.1 per 1,000 residents. The most prevalent crimes were violence and sexual offences (31.6% of total), vehicle crime (16.4%), and anti-social behaviour (10.5%), all of which highlight a pattern of property and personal safety concerns. The seasonal context of December—characterised by extended dark evenings, Christmas shopping activity, and the presence of empty homes during holiday periods—may partly explain the persistence of certain crime types. Violence and sexual offences, for instance, rose slightly in the month, potentially linked to the social dynamics of the festive season. Vehicle crime, meanwhile, saw a 21.7% increase, influenced by the higher volume of vehicles in the area during the holiday period and the reduced visibility of parked cars in dimly lit streets. Anti-social behaviour, which contributes to the overall sense of public disorder, may also be amplified by the combination of seasonal events and the closure of some local businesses during the Christmas period, leading to increased foot traffic in certain areas. These factors, combined with the area's coastal location and commuter patterns, suggest a combination of local and national trends that require further analysis to fully understand their impact on crime rates.
