Anti-social behaviour dominated Yapton’s crime profile in June 2024, accounting for 33.8% of all reported incidents and significantly exceeding the UK average by 157%. This category, which includes disorderly conduct, noise complaints, and public disturbances, likely reflects the area’s character as a built-up part of Arun, where population density and seasonal tourism may amplify social interactions. The 10.7 crimes per 1,000 residents in June places Yapton 30.5% above the UK average of 8.2, a gap that highlights the area’s unique challenges. While violent crimes (15 incidents) and property crimes (20 incidents) formed the next largest categories, their proportions were less extreme compared to anti-social behaviour. The seasonal context of June—marking the start of summer and the beginning of tourist activity in coastal and rural areas—may have contributed to the spike in anti-social behaviour, as increased foot traffic and events in public spaces could heighten opportunities for such incidents. Shoplifting, at 13.5% of all crimes, also far exceeded the UK average by 126%, linked to local retail hubs or seasonal shopping patterns. These trends suggest that community engagement and targeted policing in high-traffic areas may be necessary to address the dominant crime type. However, the overall crime rate’s slight decline from May’s 11.4 per 1,000 indicates that some interventions may be having an effect, even if anti-social behaviour remains the most pressing concern.
