In April 2023, Sudbury’s built-up area recorded a crime rate of 8.3 per 1,000 residents, placing it 10.7% above the UK average of 7.5. This figure translates to a daily risk of encountering approximately 7 crimes for every 1,000 residents, a rate that, while lower than the UK average in some categories, remains elevated in others. The most prevalent crime type was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 43.2% of all reported incidents, a share significantly higher than the UK average of 2.6 per 1,000. This concentration of violent crime may reflect Sudbury’s character as a mid-sized town with a mix of residential and commercial areas, where public spaces and local amenities could contribute to higher rates of interpersonal conflict. Anti-social behaviour followed closely at 14.2%, with shoplifting and criminal damage and arson each contributing 9.1% to the total. Seasonal factors may also play a role: the Easter holiday and spring weather likely increased outdoor activity, which could partly explain the elevated rates of anti-social and public order offences. While property crimes like vehicle crime and burglary were lower than the UK average, the dominance of violent crime highlights the need for targeted community initiatives to address local concerns.
