In April 2024, Grimethorpe’s crime rate of 9.1 per 1,000 residents placed it 18.2% above the UK average of 7.7 per 1,000, underscoring an elevated risk profile for the built-up area within Barnsley. The most prevalent crime types were public order offences (23.6% of total), violence and sexual offences (21.8%), and anti-social behaviour (20.0%). These figures align with the area’s character as a post-industrial community, where social cohesion challenges may contribute to higher rates of disorder-related crimes. Seasonal factors in April—such as Easter events, spring weather, and increased outdoor activity—likely played a role in the surge of public order incidents, which are 315% above the UK average. Meanwhile, anti-social behaviour and criminal damage also exceeded national norms by 48% and 36% respectively, reflecting patterns often observed in densely populated, historically industrial regions. The violence and sexual offences category, however, fell 22% below the UK average, a deviation that may be attributed to local policing efforts or demographic factors. As the area transitions into warmer months, the interplay between seasonal activity and crime trends will remain a critical focus for residents and authorities alike.
