In May 2023, Basingstoke and Deane recorded a crime rate of 5.7 per 1,000 residents, significantly below the UK average of 8.0 per 1,000—a gap of 28.7%. This places the area among the safer local authority districts in England and Wales. The most prevalent category of crime was violence and sexual offences, which accounted for 41.2% of all reported incidents, followed by public order offences (12.1%) and anti-social behaviour (10.5%). The lower-than-average rate for violent crime, which was 17% below the UK figure, may be influenced by the area’s relatively stable population and strong community networks. Seasonal factors, such as the longer evenings and increased social activity associated with May’s bank holidays, may have contributed to a rise in public order offences, though these remained below the UK average. Anti-social behaviour, another major category, was 55% below the UK rate, a discrepancy that could reflect the area’s lower population density or effective local enforcement strategies. Meanwhile, property crimes such as burglary and vehicle crime were also below the national average, though burglary showed a 29% increase compared to the UK figure. The overall stability in crime rates, despite these seasonal shifts, suggests that Basingstoke and Deane’s policing efforts and community engagement initiatives are likely contributing to its consistently lower crime profile.
