Anti-social behaviour dominated crime reports in Overton (Basingstoke and Deane) in July 2024, accounting for 39.4% of all crimes recorded. At 13 incidents, this category was 72% above the UK average of 1.4 per 1,000 residents, highlighting a stark divergence from national trends. The overall crime rate of 6.2 per 1,000 residents placed the area 26.2% below the UK average of 8.4 per 1,000, a consistent pattern observed in previous months. Violence and sexual offences (9 cases) and criminal damage and arson (5 cases) followed as the next most common categories. Seasonal factors likely influenced these patterns, with July’s peak summer season, school holidays, and local festivals creating conditions where anti-social behaviour may partly explain the elevated figures. The area’s relatively low overall rate contrasts with its above-average anti-social behaviour, suggesting a combination of community dynamics and broader environmental factors. While property crimes (10 cases) and violent crimes (9 cases) balanced out, the dominance of anti-social behaviour indicates a need for targeted interventions in public spaces and event management during high-traffic periods. This pattern aligns with other built-up areas in the south-east where transient populations and event-driven activity contribute to similar trends.
