Bassetlaw’s crime rate in September 2023 stood at 8.6 per 1,000 residents, placing it 7.5% above the UK average of 8.0. This marked a notable departure from the typical seasonal patterns, with anti-social behaviour emerging as a particularly striking category. At 1.7 per 1,000 residents, anti-social behaviour accounted for 19.4% of all reported crimes—27% higher than the UK average. This spike aligns with the area’s seasonal rhythm: as September ushered in the return of students to local universities and the onset of colder evenings, the mix of young people in town centres and the breakdown of summer social patterns may have contributed to increased disorder incidents. Violence and sexual offences also featured prominently, making up 30.1% of total crimes.6 per 1,000 was 5% below the UK average. This contrast highlights the combination of factors influencing different crime types. Meanwhile, shoplifting, at 0.9 per 1,000, was 61% above the UK average, reflecting the area’s retail presence and the impact of freshers’ week on local businesses. The data suggests that while some crime categories are trending upward, others, such as public order offences, remained below UK levels, indicating a nuanced picture of local safety challenges.
