Violence and sexual offences dominated Bath's crime profile in June 2023, accounting for 33.8% of all reported crimes. This category alone recorded 288 incidents, placing the area 3% above the UK average for this type of crime. Anti-social behaviour followed closely, with 189 incidents (22.2% of total crimes), 35% higher than the UK average. The overall crime rate of 8.8 per 1,000 residents marked a 3.5% increase over the UK average, reflecting persistent pressures in violent and disruptive crime. The seasonality of June—marking the start of summer and increased tourism—may partly explain the rise in certain offences, particularly those linked to public spaces and late-night activity. Shoplifting, for example, remained 48% above the UK average (72 incidents), likely driven by Bath's status as a tourist destination with high foot traffic in retail areas. Meanwhile, property crime as a whole remained below UK averages for several subcategories, including burglary (3.5% below) and vehicle crime (15% below). This contrast highlights the combination of Bath's character as a historic town with a strong retail and cultural presence and the challenges posed by seasonal fluctuations in population and activity patterns. The dominance of violence and sexual offences over property crime suggests a need for targeted interventions in public spaces and community policing strategies to address the root causes of this trend.
