Blackburn’s crime rate in December 2024 stood at 8.8 per 1,000 residents, placing the area 23.9% above the UK average of 7.1. This disparity underscores a unique local challenge, with violence and sexual offences (378 incidents) and anti-social behaviour (287 incidents) dominating the crime profile. These categories, which accounted for 34.4% and 26.1% of all crimes respectively, were significantly higher than the UK average—violence and sexual offences were 17% above, while anti-social behaviour surged 145% above the national benchmark. Shoplifting (92 incidents) also exceeded the UK rate by 23%, a trend consistent with the festive shopping season and the area’s retail presence. The seasonal context of December—characterised by dark evenings, empty homes over holidays, and heightened commercial activity—likely contributes to these patterns. While burglary rates dropped by 56.4% compared to November, the overall crime profile remains elevated, with anti-social behaviour and violence persisting as critical concerns. The area’s position relative to the UK average highlights the need for targeted interventions, particularly in addressing the disproportionate prevalence of violent and anti-social crimes, which may be influenced by local socioeconomic factors and community dynamics.
