Violence and sexual offences dominated Brynmawr's crime profile in July 2023, accounting for 35.3% of all reported crimes and driving the area's overall crime rate to 9.6 per 1,000 residents—15.7% above the UK average. This elevated rate, while concerning, aligns with patterns observed in small built-up areas where social dynamics and limited commercial infrastructure can amplify certain types of crime. The prominence of violent offences may be consistent with the summer season, when increased foot traffic and outdoor events create environments conducive to such incidents. Anti-social behaviour, which constituted 27.5% of crimes, was 83% above the UK average, suggesting a particular challenge in managing community conduct. Public order offences, though lower in volume (13.7% of total), were also higher than national benchmarks. These trends contrast with the relatively low rates of property crimes, which accounted for only 17.6% of all incidents. The data also reveals a stark regional disparity: while theft from the person and drugs-related crimes were both 186% and 82% above UK averages respectively, vehicle crime was 17% below. This divergence may reflect Brynmawr's specific characteristics, such as its rural location within Blaenau Gwent, where vehicle theft is less prevalent than in more densely populated urban centres. The seasonal context of July—peak summer, schools out, and a surge in tourism—likely contributed to the patterns observed. Local authorities may need to consider targeted interventions during this period to address the persistent overrepresentation of violent and anti-social crimes.
