April 2023 saw Ebbw Vale's crime rate reach 11.1 per 1,000 residents, 48.0% above the UK average of 7.5 per 1,000. This marked the area's highest recorded rate since data collection began, with violent crimes driving much of the disparity. Violence and sexual offences accounted for 39.7% of all incidents, significantly exceeding the UK average by 69%, while anti-social behaviour (22.3%) and public order offences (15.2%) also far outpaced national figures. The seasonal context of Easter and spring weather may have contributed to increased outdoor activity, which could explain the rise in public order issues and anti-social behaviour. However, the area also showed notable improvements: violence and sexual offences fell by 10.1% compared to March, and vehicle crime dropped by 33.3%. These reductions, though modest, suggest that targeted interventions or seasonal factors may have played a role. The high proportion of violent crimes may be partly explained by the area's built-up character within Blaenau Gwent, where population density and socioeconomic challenges can create conditions conducive to such offences. Meanwhile, the significant gap between Ebbw Vale's rates and the UK average highlights the need for continued investment in community policing and social programmes to address underlying issues.
