October 2025 marked an unexpected surge in violent crimes in South Normanton and Pinxton, a built-up area within Bolsover, despite the area’s overall crime rate remaining 18.2% below the UK average of 7.7 per 1,000. The most striking finding was the dominance of violence and sexual offences, which accounted for 50.6% of all reported crimes (45 incidents). This category’s rate of 3.2 per 1,000 was 20% above the UK average, a stark contrast to other categories that fell significantly below national figures. For example, anti-social behaviour and other thefts were 60% and 62% below the UK averages, respectively. Seasonal factors likely played a role in shaping these patterns: the end of daylight saving time, darker evenings, and Halloween festivities may have contributed to increased public order offences and criminal damage. However, the area’s lower population density and rural character may also explain the absence of higher rates in property crimes, such as burglary and vehicle crime. The balance of violent to property crimes shifted sharply, with violence making up 50.6% of the total, compared to property crimes’ 27.8% (25 incidents). This shift may reflect localized tensions or changes in policing priorities. The area’s crime profile, while generally safer than the UK average, reveals a combination of seasonal pressures and structural factors that require further analysis.
