Violence and sexual offences dominated Boston’s crime profile in December 2023, accounting for 45.5% of all reported crimes—nearly double the UK average for this category. With a total crime rate of 7.4 per 1,000 residents, the area recorded 527 crimes, placing it 2.8% above the UK’s overall average of 7.2. This rate, while modest, reflects the challenges of a major urban centre where high foot traffic, seasonal events, and the concentration of retail and hospitality venues create conditions ripe for certain types of crime. Anti-social behaviour followed closely, contributing 16.1% of incidents, with its rate at 1.2 per 1,000—29% above the UK average. This may be linked to the festive season, when alcohol-fuelled disputes and overcrowding in public spaces can escalate tensions. Shoplifting, at 0.7 per 1,000 (43% above the UK average), also stood out, potentially driven by the Christmas shopping rush. The seasonal context of December—marked by long nights, empty homes during holidays, and the heightened presence of shoppers—likely contributes to these patterns. While property crimes such as burglary and vehicle crime remained below the UK average, the dominance of violent crime and anti-social behaviour suggests a need for targeted interventions in high-risk areas.
