Violence and sexual offences emerged as the dominant crime category in Rural Breckland during May 2024, accounting for 47.3% of all reported crimes. This category, at 1.6 per 1,000, was 44% below the UK average of 2.8 per 1,000, underscoring the area's generally lower crime profile. The overall crime rate of 3.5 per 1,000 placed Rural Breckland 58.3% below the UK average of 8.4 per 1,000, a gap that reflects the built-up area's unique characteristics. As a rural district with limited urban density, the area's crime picture is shaped by its geographical and social context. The prevalence of violence and sexual offences may be linked to the area's seasonal rhythms, with May's longer evenings and increased socialising creating conditions conducive to such crimes. Anti-social behaviour followed as the second most common category (15.1% of total crimes), while other theft accounted for 10.8%. The relatively low rates of property crimes compared to the UK average suggest that the rural setting, with fewer high-density commercial zones, may limit opportunities for certain types of crime. However, the rise in criminal damage and arson (+133.3%) during May highlights how seasonal factors can temporarily disrupt this pattern. The data also shows that crimes like burglary and vehicle theft remain rare, consistent with the area's low population density and limited urban infrastructure. These figures illustrate a combination of local demographics, geography, and seasonal dynamics that shape the crime profile of Rural Breckland.
