Violent crimes were the dominant category in Broadland’s February 2023 crime profile, accounting for 48.6% of all reported incidents. At 231 cases, this category far outpaced property crimes (139 cases) and other offences, highlighting a stark contrast to areas where property crime typically drives the statistics. The overall crime rate of 3.4 per 1,000 residents placed Broadland 50.7% below the UK average of 6.9, a gap that persisted across multiple categories. For instance, violence and sexual offences—though still the most common crime type—remained 31% below the national average, while criminal damage and arson were 29% below the UK rate. This pattern suggests that local factors, such as a lower density of high-risk environments like nightlife hubs or retail centres, may contribute to the area’s comparatively safe profile. Seasonal context also plays a role: February’s low outdoor activity and pre-spring lull likely reduced opportunities for crimes that depend on public spaces, such as anti-social behaviour or public order offences. The data also reveals that categories like shoplifting and burglary were 55% and 68% below UK averages, respectively, reinforcing the idea that Broadland’s crime profile is shaped by a combination of demographic characteristics and geographic features that differ from more densely populated or commercially active regions. These findings, while encouraging, should be interpreted with caution, as they may also reflect underreporting or limitations in local policing resources.
