Violence and sexual offences dominated crime trends in High Wycombe in May 2024, accounting for 35.1% of all reported crimes and 20% above the UK average. This category, which includes assault, sexual assault, and harassment, was the most significant contributor to the area’s overall crime rate of 9.8 per 1,000 residents—16.7% higher than the UK average of 8.4. The prominence of violent crime in this built-up area of Buckinghamshire contrasts with lower rates of theft from the person and robbery, which were 41% and 9% below UK averages respectively. Seasonal factors likely contributed to the pattern, with May’s longer evenings and increased outdoor socialising potentially amplifying conflicts in public spaces. Anti-social behaviour, though lower than the UK average (17% below), remained a notable concern, reflecting ongoing challenges in managing community disorder. Meanwhile, property crime—encompassing vehicle crime, shoplifting, and burglary—accounted for 40% of total incidents, with vehicle crime (1.0 per 1,000) 113% above the UK average. This may be partly explained by High Wycombe’s retail and transport infrastructure, which could attract opportunistic theft. The data highlights a combination of local demographics, urban density, and seasonal activity, with violent crime emerging as the most striking outlier compared to national benchmarks.
