November 2023 marked a combination of seasonal and local factors in Caerphilly’s crime profile. The overall crime rate of 8.0 per 1,000 residents placed the area 6.7% above the UK average, a figure that, while modest, highlights persistent challenges in certain categories. Violence and sexual offences dominated the crime profile, accounting for 39.3% of all incidents, with a rate of 3.2 per 1,000—significantly higher than the UK average of 2.6. This overrepresentation of violent crime may reflect the area’s urban core, where high-density housing and late-night social activity create environments conducive to such offences. Anti-social behaviour followed closely, at 1.3 per 1,000, with a 24% gap above the UK average, pointing to ongoing issues with public order in town centres. Seasonal context further shaped these patterns: November’s dark evenings and the timing of Bonfire Night may have amplified incidents of anti-social behaviour, while the Black Friday shopping period likely influenced retail-related crimes. Property crimes accounted for only 28.5% of the total, a lower share than the UK average, suggesting that Caerphilly’s crime profile is more weighted toward interpersonal offences than theft or burglary. This contrast with the national trend could be attributed to the area’s mix of commercial and residential zones, where community policing efforts and local initiatives may have curtailed property crime more effectively.
