June 2023 marked a significant shift in Shelf and Northowram's crime profile, with violent crime dominating the landscape. At 4.8 crimes per 1,000 residents, the area's overall rate remained 43.5% below the UK average of 8.5 per 1,000, a gap consistent with historical trends in this built-up area within Calderdale. Violence and sexual offences accounted for 58.6% of all crimes, with 17 incidents reported—far exceeding the 2.9 per 1,000 UK average for this category. This concentration of violent crime may be partly explained by the area's proximity to urban centres, where higher population density and transient populations can contribute to such incidents. Public order offences (5 incidents) rose by 25% from May, placing them 19% above the UK average for this category. Meanwhile, property crime saw a marked decline, with burglary and vehicle crime both falling by two-thirds compared to the previous month. This shift from property to violent crime may reflect seasonal dynamics, as June marks the start of summer and longer daylight hours, altering patterns of outdoor activity and social interaction. The relatively low crime rate overall suggests that the area's rural character, despite its built-up nature, continues to contribute to a safer environment compared to national averages.
