Cannock Chase’s crime rate in April 2024 stood at 7.2 per 1,000 residents, placing it 6.5% below the UK average of 7.7 per 1,000. This figure, however, masks significant shifts in the types of crime occurring. Violence and sexual offences dominated with 291 incidents (38.8% of all crimes), followed by shoplifting (11.3%) and anti-social behaviour (9.6%). These patterns align with the area’s characteristics as a largely rural district with a mix of urban centres, where retail hubs and public spaces may contribute to shoplifting and anti-social activity. April’s seasonal context—marked by Easter and the onset of spring—likely influenced crime trends, with increased outdoor activity potentially linking to higher incidents of violence and public order offences. However, the surge in 'other crime' and drug-related offences, which are 50% and 170% above the UK average respectively, suggests emerging challenges that may not be directly tied to seasonal factors. These anomalies could reflect underreported or evolving criminal behaviour. The overall rate remains lower than the UK average, but the concentration of violent crime and the sharp rise in less common offences indicate areas requiring targeted attention.
