Violence and sexual offences dominated Herne’s crime profile in November 2025, accounting for nearly 60% of all reported incidents. This category, at 2.3 per 1,000, was 11% below the UK average for violent crime, a figure that underscores the area’s relatively low exposure to such offences. The overall crime rate of 3.9 per 1,000 was 46.6% below the UK average, a stark contrast to the national figure of 7.3 per 1,000. This disparity may be partly attributed to Herne’s status as a built-up area within Canterbury, where community cohesion and local policing strategies could contribute to lower rates of violent crime. Seasonal factors also played a role, with the dark evenings of November reducing opportunities for theft and other daylight-dependent crimes. However, the area saw a sharp rise in criminal damage and arson, which may be linked to Bonfire Night celebrations. Anti-social behaviour remained the second most common category.5 per 1,000 was 53% below the UK average. This suggests that while Herne is not immune to disruptive incidents, its residents may benefit from a combination of effective local initiatives and a lower population density compared to larger urban centres. The overall picture illustrates a balance between persistent challenges in certain crime categories and the area’s broader success in maintaining a crime rate significantly below the national average.
