June 2023 presented a mixed picture for Dunstable’s crime profile. The most unexpected development was the 100% increase in possession of weapons, a category that had previously seen no recorded incidents. This anomaly, though small in absolute terms, highlights the unpredictable nature of crime even in areas with generally low rates. The overall crime rate of 8.1 per 1,000 residents—4.7% below the UK average—suggests a relatively safe environment, but the breakdown of incidents reveals deeper patterns. Violence and sexual offences remained the most common category, comprising 31.4% of all crimes, a figure consistent with Dunstable’s urban character and potential for interpersonal conflicts in shared spaces. Anti-social behaviour, however, surged to 26.9% of total crimes, significantly above the UK average for this category, and may be linked to the summer season’s social dynamics, such as increased public gatherings or youth activity. Property crimes, including burglary and shoplifting, were below UK averages, which could reflect effective local policing or the area’s lower commercial density. Seasonal factors likely played a role, as June marks the start of the summer period, with longer daylight hours and increased tourism in nearby regions. While the overall rate remains stable, the sharp rise in weapon-related incidents and the disproportionate increase in anti-social behaviour warrant further analysis to understand their local drivers.
