Dunstable’s crime rate in July 2024 stood at 7.0 per 1,000 residents, placing it 16.7% below the UK average of 8.4. This figure reflects a broader trend observed in built-up areas during peak summer months, where seasonal factors such as festivals, school holidays, and increased tourism can influence crime patterns. The top three crime types were violence and sexual offences (30.2% of total incidents), anti-social behaviour (25.5%), and criminal damage and arson (10.2%). These figures are consistent with the area’s character as a commuter town within Central Bedfordshire, where high streets and public spaces are common targets for anti-social behaviour and property crime. The seasonal context of July—characterised by warmer weather, extended daylight hours, and a surge in visitors—may have contributed to a more active public sphere, potentially deterring some crimes while increasing others, such as shoplifting. However, the overall decline in crime compared to the previous month suggests that local initiatives or community vigilance may be playing a role. Violence and sexual offences, though significant, remained 26% below the UK average, indicating effective policing or social interventions in this category. Anti-social behaviour, however, was 24% above the UK average, a disparity that could be attributed to the area’s demographics or the presence of transient populations during the summer months. The balance between property and violent crime also shifted slightly, with property-related offences accounting for 42% of total incidents compared to 58% for violent crimes, a trend that may be influenced by the area’s retail and leisure infrastructure.
