Violence and sexual offences dominated Dunstable’s crime profile in November 2025, accounting for 35.5% of all reported incidents. At 81 cases, this category alone contributed over a third of the total 228 crimes recorded, significantly outpacing other types. The area’s overall crime rate of 6.8 per 1,000 residents places it 6.8% below the UK average of 7.3, a gap that underscores the effectiveness of local policing or community initiatives. The dominance of violent crime may be partly explained by seasonal factors: November’s darker evenings and the proximity to Bonfire Night could have increased opportunities for such offences. Anti-social behaviour followed closely, making up 11.8% of incidents, while vehicle crime, though relatively low at 11%, was 100% above the UK average. This anomaly may reflect Dunstable’s built-up character, where car ownership and traffic density create unique vulnerabilities. Meanwhile, shoplifting and drug-related offences remained below national averages, due to the town’s smaller retail footprint compared to larger urban centres. The data also highlights a 37% deficit in shoplifting rates compared to the UK, which could indicate strong retail security measures or lower foot traffic in commercial areas. As November’s dark evenings and festive events draw to a close, the challenge remains to sustain this lower crime rate while addressing the spikes in violent and vehicle-related incidents.
