Houghton Regis in July 2023 reported a crime rate of 6.7 per 1,000 residents, placing it 19.3% below the UK average of 8.3. This figure, though relatively low, masks a combination of crime types that reflect both local characteristics and seasonal influences. Anti-social behaviour dominated the monthly tally, accounting for 32.6% of all incidents, a rate 55% above the UK average. This anomaly may be partly explained by the area’s proximity to outdoor festivals and events during the summer months, which can heighten tensions in public spaces. Violence and sexual offences, while making up 28.0% of crimes, were 32% below the UK average, a discrepancy that could stem from the area’s relatively stable community dynamics compared to more densely populated urban centres. Seasonal factors also played a role: the peak of the summer holidays, combined with open-air events, likely contributed to the sharp rise in bicycle theft, which doubled from zero to two incidents. This uptick aligns with patterns observed in similar towns where increased cycling during warmer weather correlates with higher theft rates. The overall picture, therefore, is one of a generally safe area with pockets of concern that require targeted awareness, particularly around event spaces and bike storage.
