Syston’s built-up area recorded a crime rate of 5.0 per 1,000 residents in November 2025, placing it 31.5% below the UK average of 7.3 per 1,000. This figure, while modest, reflects a community with a historically lower incidence of violent and property crime. The most prevalent category was violence and sexual offences (23 incidents, 33.8% of total crimes), a rate of 1.7 per 1,000—34% below the UK average. This suggests a local context where interpersonal conflicts are managed effectively. monthly decline in such offences may partly reflect the seasonal dip in social activity during darker evenings. Shoplifting, however, emerged as a striking outlier, surging to 12 incidents (17.7% of total crimes) and exceeding the UK average by 43% (0.9 vs 0.6 per 1,000). This anomaly aligns with November’s commercial calendar: Black Friday shopping and the proximity to Bonfire Night likely drove both retail theft and anti-social behaviour. The latter category, which rose 175% from 4 to 11 incidents, may also reflect the challenges of managing public spaces during extended evenings. While property crimes like vehicle crime (7 incidents, 10.3%) and burglary (4 incidents, 5.9%) remained stable, their rates still outpaced the UK average for vehicle crime by 25%. These patterns highlight Syston’s unique balance between low overall crime and localized spikes tied to seasonal economic activity.
