Bicester's June 2024 crime rate of 8.2 per 1,000 residents matched the UK average, reflecting a balanced position in national comparisons. The most striking finding was the 303% surge in shoplifting, which accounted for 30.3% of all reported crimes—far exceeding the UK average of 0.6 per 1,000. This anomaly may be linked to Bicester's retail infrastructure, particularly its historic high street and proximity to Oxford, which could draw higher foot traffic during the summer months. Violent crimes, however, were 13% below the UK average, with 94 incidents recorded (2.4 per 1,000), suggesting a relatively lower risk of personal harm compared to other areas. Anti-social behaviour and public order offences also fell significantly below the UK average, by 50% and 2% respectively, indicating a generally orderly environment. Seasonal factors may have played a role, as the start of summer often brings increased activity in public spaces. While shoplifting dominated the crime picture, the overall rate remained stable, with no major spikes in property or violent crime. This data highlights the importance of targeted interventions in retail zones while maintaining broader community safety measures.
