Selsey's August 2023 crime rate of 8.3 per 1,000 residents marked a 2.5% increase above the UK average, reflecting a combination of local and seasonal factors. The most prevalent crime category was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 33.3% of all reported incidents, though this rate was 6% below the UK average for this category. Public order offences followed closely at 12.2%, significantly higher than the UK average of 0.6 per 1,000. This spike may be linked to the area's coastal character, where summer crowds and transient populations can strain local resources. Criminal damage and arson also rose to 12.2% of total crimes, a 59% jump above the UK average. These figures align with August's role as a peak holiday month, when empty homes and increased foot traffic may contribute to property-related crimes. Shoplifting surged to 7 incidents, matching the UK average but highlighting vulnerabilities in local retail security. Anti-social behaviour, however, remained 58% below the UK average, suggesting effective community policing or demographic factors that mitigate such incidents. The overall crime rate, while slightly above the UK average, remains relatively low for a built-up coastal area, indicating that local initiatives may be offsetting broader national trends.
