The City of London's crime rate in June 2025 stood at 55.9 per 1,000 residents, a figure 590% above the UK average of 8.1 per 1,000. This stark divergence from national trends reflects the area's role as a major financial hub with a transient population and limited residential density. The three most common crime types were other theft (19.6% of all crimes), violence and sexual offences (18.7%), and shoplifting (18.6%), each significantly exceeding UK averages. Other theft, in particular, was 2,037% above the national rate, a figure that may partly explain the area's reputation as a hotspot for non-violent, opportunistic crimes. Seasonal factors appear to play a role, as June marks the start of summer and increased tourism, which could drive shoplifting and theft from the person. The high rate of violence and sexual offences, 267% above the UK average, may be linked to the area's nightlife and late-night economic activity. While property crimes dominated (68% of all incidents), the violent crime rate was also elevated, suggesting a combination of economic activity and social dynamics in this urban centre.
