Newquay’s crime rate in May 2024 stood at 11.2 per 1,000 residents, a figure 33.3% above the UK average of 8.4 per 1,000. This stark deviation from national trends underscores the built-up area’s unique crime profile, shaped by its coastal tourism, vibrant nightlife, and seasonal rhythms. Violence and sexual offences dominated the crime profile, accounting for 33.6% of all reported incidents—far exceeding the UK average of 2.8 per 1,000. This category’s prevalence may be partly explained by the extended daylight hours and increased social activity typical of May, a month marked by bank holidays and the onset of summer tourism. Anti-social behaviour followed closely, making up 21.6% of crimes, with rates 66% above the UK average. This could be linked to the area’s high street presence and the influx of visitors during the spring season. Other theft, at 11.3% of total crimes, also showed a marked deviation from the UK average, suggesting a possible correlation with the local retail environment and transient populations. In contrast, burglary and vehicle crime remained below the UK average, reflecting Newquay’s geographical features and the relative security of its residential areas. Seasonal factors, including longer evenings and the early stages of the tourist season, may have contributed to the elevated rates of violence and anti-social behaviour, highlighting the need for targeted policing strategies during peak activity periods.
