The most striking finding in September 2023 was the 100% increase in drug-related crimes and burglary, both of which had not occurred in the previous month. This unexpected shift contrasts with the broader trend of declining crime, as the overall rate of 4.7 per 1,000 residents remained 41.2% below the UK average. Violence and sexual offences (15 cases) and anti-social behaviour (10 cases) dominated the crime profile, accounting for 55.5% of all incidents. Seasonal factors may have influenced these patterns: the return to school and university freshers could have increased social interactions in public spaces. Conversely, the sharp drop in anti-social behaviour—down 52.4% from the previous month—suggests that local initiatives or changes in community behaviour may have had an impact. Shoplifting, at 0.6 per 1,000 residents, remained slightly above the UK average, indicating that retail areas in the built-up region may still be vulnerable to targeted theft. The low overall crime rate, combined with the absence of major violent incidents, aligns with the area's character as a smaller, rural built-up area with limited commercial density compared to larger urban centres. However, the rise in drug-related crimes raises questions about how local resources are being utilised, particularly given the area's geographic isolation from major drug markets.
