Violence and sexual offences accounted for 40.4% of all reported crimes in Redruth during March 2023, making them the dominant category driving the area’s crime profile. The overall crime rate stood at 7.9 per 1,000 residents, 3.9% above the UK average of 7.6 per 1,000. This slight elevation aligns with broader trends in the built-up areas of Cornwall, where urban centres often see higher rates of violent crime compared to more rural regions. The seasonal transition to spring, with longer evenings and the clock change, may have contributed to increased social activity in public spaces, potentially influencing patterns of violence and anti-social behaviour. Anti-social behaviour followed closely as the second most common category, comprising 22.3% of all crimes, a figure 73% above the UK average. This suggests a significant local challenge, linked to the area’s mix of residential and commercial zones, where noise complaints and disorder may be more prevalent during the spring transition. Shoplifting also featured prominently, with 8.5% of crimes reported, 43% above the UK average. Retail areas within the built-up part of Redruth likely experience higher foot traffic during the spring months, creating opportunities for property-related offences. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions in public spaces and retail areas to address the specific challenges posed by the area’s urban character and seasonal dynamics.
