December 2025 saw Bishop Auckland's overall crime rate reach 13.7 per 1,000 residents, placing it 95.7% above the UK average of 7.0. This marked the highest rate in the built-up area since the start of the year, driven by a sharp rise in violence and sexual offences, which accounted for 37.5% of all reported crimes. Anti-social behaviour followed closely at 19.1%, while shoplifting contributed 11.7% of the total. These figures align with seasonal patterns typical of a mid-sized town in County Durham, where the combination of Christmas shopping activity, extended periods of darkness, and a transient population during the festive season may partly explain the elevated levels of public disorder and theft. Violence and sexual offences, in particular, were 98% above the UK average, a stark contrast to the national trend where such crimes tend to peak during summer months. The town's retail presence, concentrated along the High Street and surrounding commercial areas, likely contributes to shoplifting rates that are 181% above the UK norm, while the lack of dedicated policing resources for night-time economic activity may exacerbate anti-social behaviour. Despite these challenges, the area's crime profile remains distinct from larger urban centres, with property crimes making up a smaller proportion of the total compared to violent offences—a reflection of Bishop Auckland's character as a historic market town with a mix of residential and commercial zones.
