Anti-social behaviour dominated the crime profile in Newton Aycliffe during November 2024, accounting for 25.2% of all reported incidents. This category, which includes disturbances, vandalism, and disorderly conduct, was 161% above the UK average, reflecting the challenges of managing public space in a built-up area with limited community resources. The overall crime rate of 11.7 per 1,000 residents was 53.9% higher than the UK average, a disparity that may be partly explained by the town’s role as a regional hub for retail and transport. Violence and sexual offences, at 22.5% of total crimes, also exceeded the UK average by 1%.7% decline from October 2024. This drop could be influenced by seasonal factors, such as the reduced social activity associated with November’s shorter days and the timing of Bonfire Night, which may have temporarily disrupted criminal activity. Meanwhile, criminal damage and arson, which made up 16.4% of reported crimes, were 233% above the UK average, a figure that may be linked to the area’s older housing stock and potential issues with property maintenance. The combination of these factors illustrates a town where community engagement and infrastructure improvements could play a key role in addressing persistent crime trends.
