Violence and sexual offences emerged as the dominant category in Peterlee’s November 2025 crime profile, accounting for 29.6% of all reported incidents. This category alone exceeded the UK average by 40%, with 3.6 crimes per 1,000 residents—compared to the national figure of 2.6 per 1,000. The area’s overall crime rate of 12.1 per 1,000 residents was 65.8% above the UK average, a gap that highlights systemic challenges in local policing and community safety. Anti-social behaviour, the second most common crime, was 164% above the UK average, likely exacerbated by the area’s high-density housing and limited recreational spaces. Seasonal factors such as dark evenings, Bonfire Night, and the pre-Christmas shopping rush may have contributed to higher levels of anti-social behaviour and public order offences. The sharp increase in criminal damage and arson (202% above the UK average) could be linked to the colder weather, which may drive more property-related crimes. Meanwhile, shoplifting remained elevated, with rates 138% above the UK average, a pattern consistent with retail hubs experiencing higher foot traffic during Black Friday. Despite these challenges, the drop in violent crime—though unexplained—suggests that targeted interventions or natural fluctuations in community activity may have played a role.
