March 2023 marked a period of stability for Cumberland’s overall crime rate, which stood at 7.6 per 1,000 residents—identical to the UK average. This equilibrium, however, masks significant variations within specific crime categories. Violence and sexual offences dominated the landscape, accounting for 43.9% of all recorded crimes, a rate 20% above the UK average. This persistence may reflect the area’s demographic profile, where urban centres and older populations contribute to higher rates of interpersonal crime. Seasonal factors also played a role: the transition to spring and longer evenings may have influenced patterns of anti-social behaviour and public order offences, which were 25% and 33% above UK averages, respectively. Meanwhile, categories like bicycle theft and theft from the person were 100% below the UK average, consistent with Cumberland’s lower tourism activity and fewer high-footfall retail zones. The data suggests a combination of local geography, policing effectiveness, and seasonal rhythms. As the area moves into spring, the focus on addressing violence and public order offences may become a priority, given their continued elevation compared to national benchmarks.
