December 2025 saw Soham maintain its status as one of the UK's safest built-up areas, with a crime rate of 3.9 per 1,000 residents—44.3% below the national average of 7.0. The most prevalent crime category was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 31.8% of all recorded crimes, though this figure remains 49% below the UK average. This unexpected drop in violent crime, despite the season's typical pressures of dark evenings and holiday gatherings, contrasts sharply with the sharp rise in burglary, which surged by 500% compared to November. The seasonal context of December—characterised by Christmas shopping, empty homes, and reduced foot traffic in some areas—may partly explain these divergent trends. While the town's low crime profile aligns with its rural character and limited urban density, the sudden increase in burglary suggests a specific vulnerability during the festive period. Other notable crime types included vehicle crime (13.6% of total) and anti-social behaviour (11.4% of total), both of which showed significant shifts compared to prior months. The overall crime mix remains heavily weighted towards property crimes (50%) rather than violent incidents (31.8%), a pattern consistent with Soham's character as a smaller, low-density built-up area where property crime is more common than personal violence. This December's data highlights the combination of seasonal factors and local demographics in shaping crime patterns, even in areas with historically low rates.
