The most striking shift in September 2024 was the unexpected rise in 'Other crime,' a category that increased by 100% from one incident to two. This category, which includes activities like fraud or unclassified offences, now accounts for 14.3% of total crimes, overtaking anti-social behaviour and vehicle crime. Despite this uptick, the overall crime rate of 2.5 per 1,000 residents remains 67.5% below the UK average of 7.7 per 1,000, reflecting a consistently low-crime environment. The top three crime types — other theft (21.4%), violence and sexual offences (21.4%), and criminal damage and arson (21.4%) — are all significantly below UK averages, with violence and sexual offences at 81% below the national figure. Seasonal factors may partly explain these trends, as September marks the start of the academic year and shorter evenings. While the area’s low population density and rural-adjacent character likely contribute to its lower crime rates, the sharp increase in 'Other crime' suggests a need for closer monitoring of emerging offence patterns. The balance between property and violent crime remains skewed toward property offences, with 7 out of 14 crimes falling into this category, though both types have seen notable declines compared to previous months.
