Skegness’ December 2023 crime rate of 12.4 per 1,000 residents placed it 72.2% above the UK average, a figure that demands scrutiny. The most striking anomaly was anti-social behaviour, which occurred at a rate of 2.5 per 1,000, 169% higher than the UK average. This category alone accounted for nearly 20% of all recorded crimes, suggesting a systemic challenge in managing public order. Violence and sexual offences followed closely, with 91 incidents recorded (32% of total crimes), a rate of 4.0 per 1,000 compared to the UK average of 2.6 per 1,000. The seasonal context of December—characterised by dark evenings, holiday shopping, and the presence of empty homes—likely contributed to these patterns. Shoplifting, at 2.2 per 1,000, was 349% above the UK average, reflecting the impact of high street activity during the festive period. Despite these challenges, vehicle crime was lower, with rates 33% below the UK average, possibly due to increased car usage and reduced pedestrian traffic. The data highlights a mixed picture: while some areas of crime are significantly elevated, others show resilience. This underscores the need for targeted strategies that address the unique dynamics of a coastal town with a strong tourist economy and seasonal fluctuations in population.
