Cobham (Elmbridge) recorded a crime rate of 7.8 per 1,000 residents in October 2023, placing it 2.5% below the UK average. This performance contrasts with the previous month, which saw a 32.2% increase in the overall rate. The most prevalent crime category was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 25.7% of all incidents, followed by anti-social behaviour (22.9%) and vehicle crime (15.3%). The seasonal context of October—marked by darker evenings, the transition to British Summer Time, and the approach of Halloween—likely influenced patterns of activity and crime. While the decrease in violence and sexual offences may reflect reduced opportunities for such crimes during the shorter daylight hours, the rise in anti-social behaviour and vehicle crime suggests other factors at play. Vehicle crime, in particular, surged by 120% month-on-month, far exceeding the UK average by 131%. This could be attributed to increased traffic or changes in parking patterns during the autumn season. Anti-social behaviour also rose significantly, 41% above the UK average, linked to the social dynamics of a suburban area during the transition to colder weather. Despite these increases, the overall rate remains lower than the national benchmark, indicating that Cobham's local initiatives and community structures may be contributing to a relatively safer environment. The lower-than-average rates for shoplifting, criminal damage, and burglary—14%, 37%, and 41% below the UK average respectively—suggest that targeted measures in these areas have been effective. However, the sharp rise in vehicle crime highlights the need for continued vigilance and tailored strategies to address this emerging trend.
