Violence and sexual offences dominated Epping’s crime picture in June 2025, accounting for 29.6% of all reported incidents. This category, at 2.4 per 1,000 residents, was 16% below the UK average, a finding consistent with the area’s character as a semi-rural built-up zone with limited nightlife infrastructure. However, vehicle crime (1.4 per 1,000) surged to 278% above the UK average, a stark anomaly that may be linked to Epping’s proximity to major transport routes and the increased use of vehicles during summer months. Shoplifting (1.3 per 1,000) also rose sharply, 106% above the UK average, potentially reflecting the seasonal influx of visitors to Epping Forest, a popular destination for walking and cycling. The overall crime rate of 8.2 per 1,000 residents placed Epping 1.2% above the UK average, a narrow margin that suggests local conditions are broadly in line with national trends. The seasonal context of June—longer days and the start of summer—likely contributed to increased outdoor activity, which may have influenced patterns in both vehicle crime and anti-social behaviour. While violence and sexual offences remained the dominant category, the data highlights the need for targeted measures in vehicle-related crime, which is high compared to similar areas.
