December 2023 presented an unusual crime picture for Epsom, a built-up area within Epsom and Ewell. The overall crime rate stood at 6.4 per 1,000 residents, placing the area 11.1% below the UK average of 7.2 per 1,000. Violence and sexual offences remained the most prevalent category, accounting for 30.8% of all reported crimes, though this rate (2.0 per 1,000) was 24% below the UK average. Anti-social behaviour followed closely, making up 12.2% of incidents. The most unexpected shift, however, was the 43% above UK average rate for shoplifting, which reached 0.7 per 1,000. This anomaly may be attributed to the heightened retail activity during the Christmas season, despite a general decline in overall crime. Seasonal factors such as dark evenings and reduced foot traffic in certain areas likely contributed to lower rates of public order offences and vehicle crime. However, the spike in theft from the person, though modest in absolute terms, highlights a growing concern for residents during the festive period. The interplay of local demographics, the area's mix of residential and commercial spaces, and the timing of seasonal events all appear to shape these patterns, suggesting that Epsom's crime profile is influenced by both broader national trends and specific local conditions.
