November 2024 saw Ewell’s crime rate fall to 5.8 per 1,000 residents, a figure 23.7% below the UK average of 7.6 per 1,000. This marked improvement was most evident in the violent crime category, where incidents of violence and sexual offences—accounting for 30.7% of all crimes—were 30% below the UK average of 2.6 per 1,000. The area’s crime profile remained heavily influenced by its built-up character, with anti-social behaviour (19.4% of all crimes) and vehicle crime (9.7%) dominating the breakdown. Seasonal factors played a role in shaping patterns: the transition into darker evenings may have contributed to a 36% increase in vehicle crime compared to the UK average, while the proximity to retail hubs during Black Friday could have indirectly driven anti-social behaviour. However, the most unexpected development was the sharp rise in 'Other crime,' a category that, while not typically a major concern in Ewell, saw a 500% increase from the previous month. This anomaly may warrant closer attention, particularly as it contrasts with the broader downward trend in other categories. The area’s relatively low crime rate, combined with its proximity to Epsom and the broader commuter network, suggests a balance between urban activity and controlled community policing. Yet, the sudden spike in 'Other crime' highlights the need for vigilance in addressing emerging issues, even as overall safety improves.
