December 2024 revealed a marked dominance of violent crime over property crime in Sandiacre, a built-up area within Erewash. With a total crime rate of 5.7 per 1,000 residents—19.7% below the UK average of 7.1—the area’s crime profile contrasts sharply with national trends. Violence and sexual offences accounted for 51.9% of all reported crimes, far exceeding the share of property-related offences (20.9%). This imbalance may partly explain the area’s 19.7% deficit against the UK average, as violent crime rates in Sandiacre (3.0 per 1,000) were 17% higher than the UK average for this category. Public order offences also rose significantly, contributing 11.5% of the total, and sitting 56% above the UK average. Seasonal factors likely play a role, as December’s dark evenings, holiday gatherings, and Christmas shopping activity may increase opportunities for incidents of violence and disorder. Property crimes such as shoplifting and burglary were significantly lower than the UK average, with shoplifting rates 82% below the national figure. This suggests that while violent crime remains a pressing concern, the area’s property crime profile appears comparatively safer, reflecting a combination of local policing strategies and the characteristics of a smaller, more tightly knit community.
