Anti-social behaviour emerged as the most prominent crime category in Chatteris during August 2025, accounting for 31% of all reported incidents. This rate of 2.0 per 1,000 residents places the category 37% above the UK average, a stark contrast to the area’s overall crime rate of 6.5 per 1,000, which is 19.8% below the national average. The dominance of anti-social behaviour may reflect the built-up nature of the area, where community density and local interactions could contribute to such incidents. Violence and sexual offences, at 1.7 per 1,000, were 41% below the UK average, a trend that may be influenced by Chatteris’ smaller population and lower levels of public nightlife compared to larger urban centres. Other theft, at 0.7 per 1,000, also exceeded the UK average by 37%, linked to seasonal factors such as increased foot traffic during the summer holidays. The overall crime profile aligns with August’s role as a peak holiday month, where tourism and seasonal changes may influence crime patterns. For instance, burglary rates rose sharply in August, consistent with the increased risk associated with empty homes during this period. These dynamics highlight the interplay between local characteristics and broader seasonal trends, offering insight into how crime manifests in a Fenland built-up area distinct from both rural and major urban settings.
