December 2024 saw Wisbech’s crime rate climb to 11.0 per 1,000 residents, placing it 54.9% above the UK average of 7.1. This marked a continuation of a trend observed in recent months, with violent crime remaining a dominant concern. Violence and sexual offences accounted for 32.3% of all crimes reported, followed by criminal damage and arson (17.2%) and anti-social behaviour (10.8%). The seasonal context of December—characterised by extended evening darkness, holiday-related absences from homes, and increased retail activity—likely contributes to the elevated rates. The prominence of violent crime may be partially explained by the area’s proximity to major transport routes and the presence of high-traffic public spaces, which can amplify incidents during periods of heightened social activity. While property crime remained a significant category, the sharp rise in violent offences suggests a shift in the crime profile compared to earlier in the year. The data also highlights the disproportionate impact of certain crimes: for instance, criminal damage and arson occurred at 258% above the UK average, a figure that may reflect local factors such as the density of older housing stock or the presence of community spaces prone to vandalism. These patterns underscore the need for targeted interventions during peak periods of seasonal vulnerability, such as ensuring adequate lighting in public areas and increasing police visibility in high-risk locations.
