December 2023 saw Cinderford’s overall crime rate reach 7.8 per 1,000 residents, placing the area 8.3% above the UK average of 7.2. Violence and sexual offences dominated the crime profile, accounting for 31.9% of all reported incidents, followed by anti-social behaviour (24.6%) and public order offences (15.9%). This pattern aligns with the seasonal context of December, a month marked by Christmas shopping, extended dark evenings, and the temporary absence of some residents during holiday travel. The higher-than-average rate for violent crimes may partly reflect increased social interactions in public spaces during festive events. Anti-social behaviour, while significantly above the UK average (104%), remains a combination of local factors, including the area’s built-up nature within the Forest of Dean, which may concentrate certain activities. Public order offences, 171% above the UK average, could be influenced by the same seasonal dynamics, such as heightened alcohol consumption during the holiday period. The data also highlights a notable shift in the crime mix, with property crimes (16 incidents) making up a smaller proportion than violent crimes, suggesting a temporary realignment in criminal activity patterns during the month.
